CRM for SBA Lenders: What Business Development Officers Need
CRM for SBA lenders compared: nCino, Abrigo, Salesforce and HubSpot, plus a referral source rhythm so brokers and CPAs send your BDOs the next deal first.
By Brett Kaufman. 8 years using relationships to build sales pipelines, from political fundraising to a 7 figure business to running matchmaking for two communities. Over 1,000 introductions facilitated.
The best CRM for SBA lenders depends on who you are. A bank or credit union usually runs a lending platform with relationship features, like nCino, Abrigo or Salesforce Financial Services Cloud. A business development officer also needs something no loan platform does: a daily nudge on which broker, CPA or buyer to call before another lender does.
Full disclosure: I built FRONT OF MIND, the last tool on this list. It does not originate, underwrite or service a loan, and I will be clear about where the others win.
Here is the scene. A business broker has a $1.8 million landscaping company, a qualified buyer, and a seller who wants to close by spring. He needs a lender who does change of ownership loans and answers the phone. He scrolls his texts. The last SBA lender who reached out with something useful was three weeks ago. It was not you. You funded his last two deals. That was eight months ago.
What should a CRM for SBA lenders do?
Two jobs: run the loan, and keep the people who send loans warm. Most lending software is built for the first.
The SBA does not lend directly. Per the SBA 7(a) page, borrowers apply through a lender, the maximum 7(a) loan is $5 million, and changes of ownership are an eligible use. That means your files arrive through people:
- Business brokers who want buyers prequalified before a listing goes wide.
- CPAs and attorneys whose clients are buying or selling.
- Repeat buyers and searchers who close one deal and start the next.
- Borrowers from SBA’s own Lender Match, which says it sends a borrower a list of interested lenders within two business days.
The first three run on relationships. If you want to see this from the buyer’s chair, read SBA lenders as a deal source. It is the same relationship, viewed from the other side.
How do the main options compare?
Prices and features below come from each vendor’s site as of October 2026.
| Tool | Price | Best for | Where it strains |
|---|---|---|---|
| nCino | Not listed, demo | Banks and credit unions scaling small business lending | Built for the institution, not one BDO’s week |
| Abrigo | Not listed, demo | Community banks that want lending plus a referral tracking CRM | Tracks referrals logged, not sources going quiet |
| Salesforce Financial Services Cloud | From $325 per user a month, billed annually | Larger banks with an operations team | Price and setup weight |
| HubSpot | Free for 2 users and 1,000 contacts, Starter from $15 a seat | Nonbank lenders and independent BDOs | You build the lending structure yourself |
| FRONT OF MIND | Free for 25 contacts, then $29 a month | Knowing which referral source to text today | Not a loan system, no bank record |
nCino
What it is. A banking platform for financial institutions. Its small business lending page is aimed at credit unions, community banks and farm credit institutions, and describes a US community bank that became a leading SBA lender after adopting nCino.
Cost. No price listed.
Where it strains. It runs the loan and the workflow. It is not designed to tell a BDO which broker has not heard from them since spring.
Abrigo
What it is. Abrigo’s small business lending software covers digital applications, document management, configurable workflows, AI loan scoring and CFPB 1071 reporting for banks and credit unions. Its 360 View CRM adds a full customer view, referral tracking “from introduction through account opening,” and pipeline management with close probability.
Cost. No price listed. You request a demo.
Best for. Community banks that want lending and referral tracking from one vendor.
Where it strains. Referral tracking starts when someone logs the referral. The broker who stopped sending files never creates a record.
Salesforce Financial Services Cloud
What it is. Salesforce’s industry edition for banking, wealth and insurance. Per its pricing page, Sales Core is $325 per user a month, Advanced $500, and Max $700, billed annually.
Best for. Larger banks with administrators to configure it.
HubSpot
What it is. A general CRM. Per HubSpot’s CRM page, the free plan covers up to two users and 1,000 contacts, with contact management, deal pipelines and reporting dashboards. Starter begins at $15 per seat a month.
Best for. Nonbank lenders and independent loan officers who want a free pipeline.
Where it strains. You build loan stages yourself, and it is only as current as your last entry.
How often should a BDO touch each referral source?
Here is the rhythm I would run. It is a starting point, not a rule. The information gain on this page is this table and the scorecard below it.
| Source | Rhythm | Reasons that work |
|---|---|---|
| Broker who sent a file this year | Every 4 to 6 weeks | Status on their file, a closed loan, a buyer you just prequalified |
| Broker who has never sent one | Every 8 to 10 weeks | A rule change that affects their listings, an intro to a buyer |
| CPA or attorney who refers | Every 6 to 8 weeks | Update on the client they sent, a tax or rate change |
| Repeat buyer or searcher | Every 6 to 8 weeks | Their buy box, their last close, a broker you can introduce |
Then score your sources once a quarter:
- List every person who sent a file in the last 24 months.
- Write the date of your last real conversation next to each name.
- Flag anyone past their rhythm. Those are the files going to another lender.
- Report back on every file. Funded, declined, or withdrawn, tell the source in two lines.
- Make one intro a month. A buyer to a broker, a CPA to an attorney. I have made over 1,000 introductions, and this is the touch people remember.

FRONT OF MIND
What it is. The daily layer for one BDO. It opens on your 10 minutes for today. Each person comes with a one line reason why today: a follow up is due, their company was in the news, you met at an event and never followed up, a pipeline deal has been quiet 7 days or more, or they are going cold.
Every draft reads like a text, 40 words max. Nothing sends without your tap, and it learns from your edits. Ask Liala “who do I know that is a business broker in Ohio” and get the right people with why. Met a broker at a conference? Say their name and a sentence, snap the badge, and it is filed under the event.
There is no native iPhone app yet. It runs in your phone’s browser, and you can save it to your home screen.
Cost. Free for your first 25 contacts and 1 intro, then $29 a month. Concierge setup is $500. Contacts are encrypted. No one on our team looks at them. Export and delete anytime.
If FRONT OF MIND doesn’t surface people in your network worth reaching out to within 72 hours, we’ll refund you. No questions asked.
Where it strains. No applications, underwriting, documents, servicing or bank reporting. Borrower data belongs in your bank’s systems. Check your bank’s policy before importing anything.
How would I choose?
- Bank or credit union scaling SBA volume: nCino or Abrigo, depending on your core and your team.
- Larger bank on Salesforce already: Financial Services Cloud.
- Nonbank lender or independent BDO: HubSpot free to start.
- You want to know which broker or CPA to text today: FRONT OF MIND, next to the bank’s record.
The loan platform funds the deal. The next file goes to the lender the broker heard from last. Start free with your first 25 contacts and see which broker comes up first.
