AI for Deal Sourcing: The Data Layer and the People Layer
AI for deal sourcing, compared fairly: what Grata, SourceScrub and Inven say they cover, and the relationship layer that decides who hears about a deal first.
By Brett Kaufman. 8 years using relationships to build sales pipelines, from political fundraising to a 7 figure business to running matchmaking for two communities. Over 1,000 introductions facilitated.
AI for deal sourcing platforms like Grata, SourceScrub and Inven are built to find and map companies: millions of private businesses, who runs them, and where they show up. They tell you who to target. They do not tell you who in your own contact list can get you a warm answer this week.
Here is the weekend. Your associate builds a list of 400 home services companies in the Southeast in two days, a job that used to take a month. Monday morning you have the best target list your firm has ever had.
Meanwhile a broker you met at a conference in March gets a mandate for one of those 400. He calls three buyers. He texted with all three in the last month. He has not heard from you since March.
The list was right. The call went elsewhere.
What do AI deal sourcing platforms actually do?
They search and map private companies at a scale no team can match by hand. Here is what three of them say about themselves, from their own sites, as of October 28, 2026.
| Platform | What it says it covers | Built for | Pricing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grata | “22M+ companies mapped,” “10M executive contacts,” “55K+ live deals & mandates” from the MergerLinks advisor network | PE, advisors, family offices, independent sponsors, banks | Not published; Growth, Scale, Alpha tiers, book a demo |
| SourceScrub | “17M companies woven together with 290,000 Sources and lists” | Private equity, investment banking, corporate development, consulting | Check their site |
| Inven | “65M+ companies,” “160+ markets,” “3M+ transactions” | Investment banking, PE, consulting, corporate development, business brokers | Check their site |
Each also has its own angle. Grata describes an M&A agent called Blueflame and “seller intent signals.” SourceScrub lists conference planning, market mapping and CRM enrichment. Inven says it shows sources on every data point.
These are their claims, not my tests. Run a demo on your own thesis before you believe any number on a homepage.
Where is AI for deal sourcing strongest?
It is strongest at the top of the search: turning a thesis into a real list.
- Market maps. Every company in a niche, by geography and rough size, in an afternoon.
- Add on targets. Finding the small operators around a platform company that never hired a banker.
- Conference prep. Knowing which companies on a list will be at an event before you book the flight.
- Coverage checks. Seeing which parts of a market your firm has never touched.
If you are still building target lists in spreadsheets from trade association directories, this is a real upgrade. Be fair to it.
What does the data layer not cover?
It does not cover who thinks of you when a deal moves. That is the people layer, and it decides the off market deals.
A platform can tell you a company exists, who owns it, and sometimes that the owner looks like he is getting ready. It cannot tell you:
- Which broker has a mandate this month and whether you are recent with him. Brokers build short lists from memory. More on that in why brokers send deals to recent buyers.
- Who in your phone knows the owner. His CPA, his estate attorney, his lender, a friend who sold a similar company. Those people hear first. See CPAs as a deal source.
- Whether the owner will take your call. A cold email from a list is one of hundreds he gets. A text from someone he trusts is not.
- What you promised and to whom. The intro you owe the lender is not in any company database.
Private equity firms already know this. A survey covered in how PE firms source proprietary deals breaks down how much closed deal flow still runs through relationships.
Data layer or people layer: which question goes where?
Use this table to decide which tool answers which question on a live search.
| Question | Sourcing platform | Your network |
|---|---|---|
| Which companies fit my thesis? | Yes | Partly |
| Who owns them and how big are they? | Yes | Partly |
| Is this owner thinking about selling? | Sometimes, from signals | Often, from people who know him |
| Who can make a warm intro? | No | Yes |
| Which broker will call me first? | No | Yes, if you are recent |
| Who did I promise something to? | No | Yes, if you wrote it down |
The left column scales. The right column closes.
How do you combine AI deal sourcing with your network?
Run the list through your contacts before you run it through your outreach tool.
- Build the list on the platform. Say 300 targets, illustrative.
- Ask your network who knows them. For each target, ask who in your contacts works in that city, that industry, or with that kind of owner: CPAs, lenders, attorneys, brokers.
- Mark the warm ones. Say 9 of the 300 have someone you know one step away. Those 9 get a text to the connector, not a cold email to the owner.
- Text the intermediaries who cover the niche. Every broker who works home services in that region hears from you this month with a specific reason.
- Keep score. Write down every intro you asked for and every one you owe, with the date.
The 291 still go to outreach. The 9 are where your best odds are.
Here is how I would run it
I have made over 1,000 introductions, and the pattern does not change. The person who gets the call is the one who came to mind, not the one with the best list.
Full disclosure: I built FRONT OF MIND, so weigh this accordingly. It sits on the people layer, next to whatever data platform you use.
Ask Liala your network a question out loud, like “who do I know that is an M&A advisor” or “who lives in Miami,” and get the right people with why. That is step 2 above, without a spreadsheet. Intros to make this week show up with dated proof on both sides.
It opens on your 10 minutes for today. Each person has a one line reason why today: they posted, a deal in your pipeline has been quiet 7 days, their company was in the news, you met at an event and never followed up, or the relationship is going cold. Every draft is a text style message, 40 words max, and nothing sends without your tap.
There is no native iPhone app yet. It runs in your phone browser and saves to your home screen. Your contacts are encrypted. No one on our team looks at them. Export and delete anytime. The longer version of this system is in deal flow for business buyers.
Keep the platform for the list. Start free with your first 25 contacts and see who comes up first.
