FRONT OF MIND vs Monica: An Honest Monica Personal CRM Alternative

Monica is open source and you can host it yourself. FRONT OF MIND tells you who to text today and why. What each does better, with October 2026 pricing.

Monica is the better pick if you want an open source personal CRM you can host on your own server, with full control of your data. FRONT OF MIND is the better pick if your income comes from your network and you want to open your phone each morning to the few people worth texting today, why, and a draft ready to send.

Full disclosure: I built FRONT OF MIND. Monica does several things better than mine, and I will name them.

If you are here, there is a good chance you just tried to sign up for Monica and hit a wall. As of October 2026, its pricing page says “Registration is currently closed.” (Monica pricing) So you are looking for something else, or deciding whether to host it yourself.

The short answer

Monica calls itself “the open source personal CRM.” Its promise is “Remember the people you care about.” You log reminders, notes, activities like meals and calls, journal entries, custom details, and how people relate to each other: families, partners, coworkers. It has been open source and developed in public since 2017. (Monica)

FRONT OF MIND opens every morning on your 10 minutes for today. Each person has a one line reason why today: they posted, it is their birthday, you met at an event 9 days ago and never followed up, a follow up is due, a pipeline deal has been quiet 7+ days, their company was in the news, or they are going cold. Each comes with a drafted text you edit and send.

Monica remembers what you tell it. FRONT OF MIND tells you who to talk to.

What Monica does better

  • You can host it yourself. The full open source app runs on your own server, free, with unlimited contacts and users as far as your setup allows. FRONT OF MIND has no self hosted version.
  • Open source. You can read the code. Monica says it has 25k+ GitHub stars and has been built in public since 2017.
  • Simple pricing promises. Its pricing page says it does not charge for more contacts, reminders, data export, API access or cancellation, and that your data is never sold and never used for advertising.
  • Relationship mapping. Monica models families, partners, friendships and coworkers in detail. If you want a rich record of who is married to whom and whose kid plays travel soccer, it is built for that.
  • Personal life, not just work. Monica is pitched for people you care about: “Call your mother. Congratulate your friend.” It is a good fit for keeping a close circle warm.

If you are technical, value control above everything, and mostly need a well organized memory, Monica is the honest choice.

What FRONT OF MIND does that Monica does not

Monica is a careful notebook. You write in it, you set reminders, it reminds you. That works for a close circle of 50. It strains when your phone holds 1,100 names and your income depends on which 5 you text this week.

Say you know 800 people. A reminder you set in March does not know that a banker just changed firms, or that someone you met at a dinner last week is waiting to hear from you. You still open the app and decide.

  • It picks the people. You open it to a short list, each with the reason it is there today.
  • It watches for real signals. Posts, birthdays, news about their company, deals gone quiet. A post is only shown if it is confirmed to belong to that person.
  • It writes the text. Every draft is 40 words max, written like a text you would send yourself. Nothing sends without your tap, and it learns from your edits.
  • It captures in the room. Say a name and a sentence out loud, snap a card or badge, or take a selfie together. It is filed under the event.
  • You can ask your network. Ask Liala out loud, “who do I know that is an M&A advisor” or “who lives in Miami,” and get the right people with why.
  • It finds intros. Intros to make this week, with dated proof on both sides.

On your phone

Neither has a native iPhone app today. Monica says its web app works on a phone, and native iOS and Android apps come after its v3 rebuild. FRONT OF MIND also runs in your phone’s browser, with capture built for the room. If a native app is a must, Dex and Mesh have one now. I compared them in best personal CRM for deal makers.

What is happening with Monica

Monica’s blog says a rebuilt version is coming. Its August 2026 posts announce a rebuilt version that stays open source and self hostable. Its October 26, 2026 post says new signups were paused because the new version is close, and existing users can still log in. (Monica blog) If you love Monica’s approach, waiting for v3 is a reasonable choice.

On privacy

This is where Monica is strongest, and it is a fair question to ask any tool. If you self host, your contacts never leave your server. For FRONT OF MIND, your contacts are encrypted, no one on our team looks at them, and you can export and delete anytime. Before you import anywhere, run the checks in is it safe to upload your contacts to an app and read what happens to my contacts if I cancel.

Which one to pick

Pick Monica if you want open source, self hosting, and a detailed personal memory for a close circle, and you are fine deciding who to reach out to yourself.

Pick FRONT OF MIND if your deals, referrals and introductions come from people who thought of you first, and you want the deciding and the drafting done before your first call.

Every other head to head is in personal CRM comparisons.
